It is difficult to imagine how deaf and blind people could write, read and have friends. Helen Keller was from Alabama and she was only 1 year old when she had an illness which left her unable to see or hear. Parents found a tutor for Helen, Anne Sullivan, who had very poor eyesight. She taught Helen how to spell out words with her hands. She gave her an example to touch and showed how to spell this word. Later she could read Braille and type with both a Braille and ordinary typewriter. She learnt how to understand what her teacher was saying by feeling her mouth. Helen also was the first deaf-blind person with university degree. Helen wrote a lot of books and essays, gave lectures.
