William Shakespeare was an English poet and playwright during the time of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. He is the greatest writer in the English language. He wrote 36 plays and many love sonnets. He wrote three kinds of plays: comedies, tragedies and histories. In comedies he wrote about mix-ups or absurd situations. Shakespeare's tragedies are about revenge, deception and fate. Most of plays were performed at the Globe theatre in London. It could hold about 3000 people. There was no roof, it was noisy and smelly, but there were fantastic costumes and special effects. The original theatre burnt down, but a modern replica opened in 1997
