Food for children in Japan are different from lunch meal in other countries. An obento or bento is one of the oldest traditions in Japan. Obento boxes have been part of the Japanese society since the 5th century and they have become very popular since then and you can buy them almost anywhere. An obento usually consist of rice, meat or fish, vegetables and fruit. Food in obento is shaped like flowers, animals and cartoon characters. It is important that food should be nourishing and healthy and could be easily eaten with chopsticks or fingers. The Japanese have always looked upon the mother as one of the main influences of a child's success. Mothers take great pride in creating "school-bentos" for their children.
